The nineteenth century in India was a very tough place for muslims. The British went to India towards the end of the seventeenth century .Initially they sought permission to build bases in coastal towns in order to trade with the locals, but by the beginning of the nineteenth century, they had established themselves as the rulers sending many trained missionaries to preach and spread christianity. The Archbishop of Canterbury , during his visit to India in the 1820s declared that " because the British rule over India and control all it's affairs , it's only right that Indians should take up the religion of the British as well, Christianity. Missionaries were travelling the length and breadth of the country , especially insulting muslims , Islam and the prophet s.a.w. and challenging muslims to public debates.
On one such occasion, in Delhi which had been the center and capital of muslim rulers for centuries , one priest was arrogantly challenging muslims to come forward and be prepared to throw the Quran into the fire along with the bible. Whichever survived the flames should be taken to be the true book. They had brought a special fireproof copy of the bible and felt confident that it will not burn if thrown into the fire. The ordinary public were taken back by the priest's confidence and daring gesture. One of the mashaaikh of Delhi on hearing the challenge of the priest came forward and said." You obviously don't have any respect for the Quran but we the muslims also respect the bible and feel it to be an insult to throw the books of Allah into the fire. Why don't you hold the bible and I will hold the Quran and then let "us both" jump into the fire. whoever survives, his religion and book is true and whoever burns is a liar." The priest thought "we have made the bible fireproof but I did not make myself fireproof".
